Rojo

Image
A new painting called "Rojo". All the trees in my yard are looking like this. Very sculptural, no leaves just the branches. We have a japanese maple with red branches (my inspiration for this painting). So that's why this one is called "Rojo". It's a little different than what I usually paint, but the process of painting this tree is really relaxing. Everything from spreading the plaster to defining the tiny branches. So much so that I've been painting trees like crazy this week. This one actually reminds me of red sea coral. All of the trees paintings will be up on Ebay this week. Title: "Rojo" Measures 6x6 inches on hardboard panel, acrylic and thickly gessoed for added texture. (unframed)

La Catrina con Flores

Image
I have always been fascinated by La Catrina and as a kid was terrified of them. Or anything that had to do with skeletons or skulls. Now as an adult I find them beautiful and in a way make the thought of death (La Muerte) not so scary. I grew up with my parents telling me stories of La Siguanba and La Llorona. Or el Cucuey which hides in dark spaces. Forget about playing hide & seek ... no way was I gonna hide in a closet or behind a stairwell. Why parents tell such stories to young impressionable minds is beyond me. Jose G. Posada's La Catrina etching didn't seem so scary and which is why I think so many artist (at least this artist) try to capture her in fun whimsical forms. So this my version of her with a big hat of course with flowers, feathers and lots of ribbons, a flower bouquet and long flowing sleeved coat and of course a sexy high slit for her boney legs to show. "La Catrina con Flores" 6x12 inches on gallery wrapped canvas with deep 1.25 inch sides, p

Frida in Red 5x7 inches

"Frida in Red" 5x7 inches on canvas. I've been playing with this thick gesso to add texture. Kind of cool effect... I really like how the paint just glides on the gesso and leaves a shadow of color after you wipe it off.

Frida Fresco mini painting

Image
4x4 inches, 1.25 inches deep. This little Frida is thickly textured using plaster thick gesso on the canvas before applying the acrylic. Hard to tell from the scan... I'll try and add another pic later. Been having fun lately just enjoying the process and not really worrying about the outcome.

Happy Valentine's Day

Coffee at 9pm made me do it.

Image
Tim and I have gotten into the bad habit of having coffee in the evening lately. It's bad enough that I am already a night owl (without cafe) but this is really throwing me over the edge (I was up till 3am last night!). Since I was up I started playing with my website and decided to change the look. This is what I came up with. It's kind of funky but I'm liking it... well at least until I get another urge to stay up late. I'm definately writing off those late night cafecitos. Maybe I'll switch to hot chocolate!...( umm no ). Maybe I'll just stick to painting them.
